New contenders in race for Homer City Council
Five Homerites are vying for two seats on City Council. Monday was the deadline to file as a candidate for the October election.The City Council candidates include two incumbents: Jason Davis, who has been on the council since 2021, and Storm Hansen, who has held a seat since 2019. Plus, there’s three people hoping to win their first term on City Council: Kenny Bryant, Mark Gordon and Jay Baker.

The Homer Chamber of Commerce hosted a debate Thursday night at Lands End Resort with candidates for the Alaska governor’s race. Democratic candidate Les Gara and former Gov. Bill Walker, an independent, along with former Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Charlie Pierce — who showed up unexpectedly — discussed their stances on a number of hot button issues. All three hope to unseat incumbent Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy, who declined an invitation to the event.

There’s a special “youth-only” fishing opener on the Homer Spit this Saturday. A portion of the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon will be open from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. for youth anglers age 15 years and younger looking to catch coho salmon.
Seldovia city manager won’t renew contract
Seldovia’s city manager is leaving the city after two years on the job. Rachel Friedlander said she’s relocating to the Lower 48 after a decade in Alaska and two years in the Kachemak Bay community. Her contract with the city expired this week.
