  • The Alaska Board of Fisheries concluded its Upper Cook Inlet Finfish meeting Tuesday, after hearing days of public testimony and voting on hundreds of proposals; and Peninsula Piano Tuning and Service has been improving the Kenai Peninsula’s pianos for nearly two years, and is home to the area’s only full-time piano technician.
  • The Anchor Point Post Office marked its 75th anniversary with an open house last Friday (03/01).
  • Parents and school staff filled the seats at the Homer Middle School Library for a panel discussion about teen mental health earlier this week [2/27]; and Alaska State Troopers arrested a Soldotna man this week on one count of cruelty to animals after they say he shot his dog in an attempt to euthanize it.
  • The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly heard public comment on an ordinance to sell borough-owned land and discussed pending legislation on energy and resilience projects at Tuesday night’s [2/27] meeting.
  • Jr. Iditarod is a 150 mile dogsled race for mushers ages 14 to 17. Addy Pederson, the only competitive youth musher on the southern Kenai Peninsula, is racing this year for the first time; and The State of Alaska owes the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District and two other Alaska districts millions, according to a December letter from the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Homer Pratt Museum staff work to overcome budget shortfalls and deteriorating infrastructure coming into the 2024 season.
  • The state of Alaska has seen a backlog in pending applications for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, more commonly known as SNAP. As a result, some Kenai Peninsula residents who rely on food assistance are leaning more on the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank.
  • The Homer City Council unanimously approved changes to a tariff related to the Homer Port and Harbor, authorized pass-through funds from Doyon Limited related to a traffic impact study, and appropriated funds to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the sister city relationship with Teshio, Japan at Monday nights [2/12] meeting.
  • The Homer City Council introduced an ordinance changing fees and rules for the city’s harbor facilities; and this week, elementary and middle schoolers across the peninsula had the opportunity to try their hand at ice fishing.
  • The Kenai Peninsula Borough has reclassified its 1,000-acre Cooper Landing property known as Unit 395 for resource management and recreation; and a new study from the Alaska Environment Research and Policy Center finds that microplastics, or fragments of plastic less than 5 millimeters in length, were found in 100% of water bodies tested throughout Southcentral Alaska.
