Homer Steps Up community walking challenge is a free, four week event running May 1 – 28, 2024. In its 8th year, this popular event is open to anyone on the southern Kenai Peninsula, and regularly attracts hundreds of individuals on dozens of teams to compete for over $3,000 in random drawing and cash prizes. The winning team, based on a cumulative average of their members’ steps gets bragging rights, their name on the traveling trophy and a $500 award for a non-profit of their choice. The challenge is free to register online, and teams of 5-25 members compete by logging their steps using a wearable fitness tracker, smartphone or tracking and entering them manually. EXTRA:Prizes - The top three winning teams will get the opportunity to designate cash donations to a local non-profit of their choice. Thanks to a grant from South Peninsula Hospital Foundation, all individual participants reaching a weekly step average of 35,000 steps (approximately 5,000 steps a day) will be entered for weekly prize drawings and $1,800 in end of challenge cash prizes. Three winners will be drawn in three different step categories weekly, and they are eligible for $100, $200 and $300 cash prizes at the challenge end. New this year is a youth category. Winners will be announced and all will be celebrated at the end of challenge awards event.
Free indoor walking - As part of this event, free indoor walking will be provided every Wednesday in the month of May starting May 1st from 5-6pm at SPARC. During this time participants can enjoy free indoor walking, pick up free Homer Steps Up swag, get a free blood pressure reading and get assistance signing up. All are invited to stay from 6-7pm for free community yoga.

The 31st Annual Safe and Healthy Kids Fair is set for Saturday, May 4th from 11am-2pm at the Homer High School. This is a free, family friendly event for children of all ages to focus on safety, health, wellness, and fun! It offers more than 25 booths and stations with hands on activities and demonstrations. All attendees are invited to enter their names into a drawing for a brand new bike – multiple sizes for differing age ranges will be available to win! Kids can bring their bikes and helmets for a free bike inspection and enjoy the bike rodeo. Helmets are required, and are available for purchase on site at a discounted rate. Other attractions include visits from Beary the Be Well Bear, the ever popular teddy bear clinic, stilt walkers, BOB the bookmobile, giveaways, a fire truck and ambulance, free car seat checks, free lunch, resources from community agencies, and more! Costumes are encouraged! The Safe and Healthy Kids Fair is organized by a committee representing local organizations whose missions include facilitating healthy outcomes and injury prevention for youth. Fireweed Frescoes Kindergarten through 2nd Graders play violin at Fireweed Academy's May Day Celebration on Saturday, May 4th. The celebration is from 1-4 PM with the Frescoes taking the outdoor stage around 2:30 PM.
The Fireweed May Day Celebration is FREE, event celebrating summer and community. Join us for an afternoon of local live music with Katie Klan and the Fireweed Frescoes, May Pole dances, flower crown making, face painting, games, and a cake walk. Invite your family, friends and neighbors. Located on the Little Fireweed Campus at 813 East End Road.
Heidi's Booty Camp is a fabulous introductory workout class available to all ages & sizes! It will be based on basic form and functional movements that will progress into HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) using body weight and minimal equipment. Participants will work at their own pace and level. Led by instructor Heidi Cox. Cost of class is $3 and is scheduled for Tues. & Thurs. from 5:30-6:30pm.
Kids are allowed to come during this class but PLEASE bring your own toys & NO balls or wheeled equipment/toys allowed (for safety reasons).

The 33rd annual KPBSD juried student art show "Visual Feast" is opening on April 5th at the Kenai Fine Art Center at 816 Cook Avenue in Kenai. The opening reception is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Middle school awards will be presented at 5:30 and High school awards at 6:00. Please come celebrate and support your local student artists! If you cannot make the reception feel free to stop by and view the art through April 26th!
We are so excited to have Gretchen McCullough back at the SPARC teaching a Zumba class on Sunday's from 5:30-6:30pm. This class is available to adults & high schoolers (14+) for $6.00 ($3 for SPARC & $3 for instructor). Hope to see you there!

Zumba is a workout that mixes low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a lots of fun.
