  • Prince William Sound Regional Citizens’ Advisory Council held a board meeting in Homer for the first time in nine years last Thursday and Friday; and four people are running to fill two seats on Homer’s city council this year. Caroline Venuti is one of the incumbent members running in this year’s election.
  • Fat Bear Week, the annual celebration of brown bears gearing up for hibernation at Katmai National Park and Preserve, kicks off this week with its junior bear competition; and the City of Kenai has entered into an official agreement with the Army Corp of Engineers to stabilize its eroding bluff. City officials say the project has been a long time coming, but the signing is a clear step forward.
  • Daniel Hasche is a Homer resident who works in construction and landscaping. He has lived in Homer for six years and is running for city council - and public office in general - for the first time; and a fisherman in Homer recently reeled in a rock greenling that has caught the attention of researchers and scientists from around the world. However, the fish, which has brightly colored blue flesh, is more common than one may think.
  • Since this summer, a cohort of Kenai Peninsula drivers and auto workers have been vocal with their concerns about salt brine, a liquid deicing treatment the Department of Transportation uses on roads. Now, legislators are getting involved; four people are running to fill two seats on Homer’s city council this year; and The Homer Winter King Salmon Tournament, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, will be held in March next year, returning to its original pre-pandemic timeframe.

  • The Kenai Silver Salmon Derby is a week-long fishing competition. This year, for the first time, proceeds from the event will go to management and improvement efforts along the Kenai River; Aleutian Airways began offering services between Homer Airport and Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport on Tuesday; and Wildlife Troopers are looking for information on a caribou that was illegally killed and improperly harvested near Soldotna last week.
  • The Kenai Peninsula Borough has extended its emergency declaration through October 24; The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly is asking the state to change its policy on school board term limits; and Karluk, a village of just a couple dozen year-round residents on the southern end of Kodiak Island, will have a school for the first time in five years.
  • A teen crashed a stolen car into a Nikiski house causing 10s of thousands in damage, according to Alaska State Troopers; and The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s vessel Okeanos Explorer is docked in Seward after finishing a five-month research expedition of maritime Alaska.
  • Since 2021, the Kenai Watershed Forum has visited more than 50 streams and lakes throughout the central Kenai Peninsula to determine where anadromous fish, such as salmon, can be found; and Congresswoman Mary Peltola’s husband was flying moose meat from a remote hunting site in Western Alaska Tuesday night when his plane crashed, according to officials in an update.
