The first Juneteenth celebration to be held in Homer will take place at WKFL Park today.
Juneteenth honors the day news reached Texas that the Civil War was officially over and that those enslaved in America were free by law. That was 155 years ago and more than two year after the passing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Peaceful demonstrations will continue at WKFL Park in Homer every day this week from 2 to 4 p.m. seeking racial justice in response to police violence against African Americans across the country.
The demonstration, similar to thousands like it large and small around the world, was triggered by the killing of George Floyd, a handcuffed black man, by a Minneapolis Police officer while three other officers watched. It was caught on video and broadcast worldwide.

Homer Holds Peaceful Protests After Election

Nov 11, 2016

Demonstrations were seen across the nation last week after the conclusion of this year’s presidential election made Republican Donald Trump the President Elect.

Trump’s campaign, which was largely run on nationalistic rhetoric emboldening white supremacist groups, insulting women, immigrants, and people of non-Judeo Christian faiths, has many Americans upset.

On Friday, Nov. 11, in Homer, residents held two peaceful gatherings at Wisdom, Knowledge, Faith and Love, or WKFL Park.

Tuesday was the third Vietnam Veterans Day in a row to be celebrated in Alaska. It was also the third year a mother and daughter from Homer stood inside a local Homer park waving signs supporting Vietnam Vets at passing commuters. President Obama made Vietnam Veterans Day a national holiday in 2012. In 2013 Alaska Governor Sean Parnell followed suit by proclaiming March 29th Vietnam Veterans Day in Alaska. KBBI’s Quinton Chandler visited Christie Hill and her daughter Mckenzie in WKFL Park Tuesday.
