Homer Council on the Arts 2025 Community Awards
Homer Council on the Arts held their annual meeting and announced community arts awards on Saturday July 19th. Though KBBI was not able to attend directly, HCOA’s Marketing Coordinator Jenna Gerrety, shared details about the event and the community members who received the awards this year.

Homer Council on the Arts 2025 Broadway Bootcamp is Open for Registration and Starts August 5th
Broadway Bootcamp, hosted by Homer Council on the Arts, is a five day theater and creative arts camp that will start on August 5th for Homer youth in grades 8 through 12. Director Jim Anderson spoke with Emilie Springer about more details on what the camp will offer this year.

Dr. Steve Anderson provides a talk on climate change from the perspective of geology
Dr. Steve Anderson, geologist with the University of Colorado, now living in Ninilchik, will provide a presentation on “what rocks can tell us about the future” at the KPC campus on Tuesday July 22. The talk is co-hosted by the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies. KBBI’s Emilie Springer spoke with Dr. Anderson about what brought him to Alaska, his background in geology and a preview of what he’ll share at the talk.

Anchorage illustrator and arts educator Lee Post will be in Homer offering two free workshops about drawing comics on Friday and Saturday this week. Emilie Springer spoke with Lee Post for more details on his experience and what the workshops will entail.

Free vaccine popup in Homer offers care for local dogs
Pet owners in Homer brought their dogs to a free vaccination clinic Monday, hosted by Homer Animal Friends at the United Methodist Church on East End Road. The event took place during the church’s weekly food drive.
Seven people rescued after boat sinks near Homer
The vessel sank just minutes after leaving Homer Harbor on Tuesday evening. Nearby vessels responded quickly after a passenger called for help.
Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve hosts Alaska Invasive Green Crab Awareness Day Molt Walk
Saturday July 19th is Alaska Invasive Green Crab Awareness Day and the Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve will host a free, family-friendly molt walk, collect and identify crab molts at Bishop’s Beach and answer questions participants might have about the species. Emilie Springer spoke with Jasmine Maurer at the Research Reserve for more information.

Homer Chamber of Commerce begins the sixth annual local Peony Celebration
Homer’s annual Peony Celebration which began in 2019, six years ago, has many local events starting in mid-June and runs through August. Rita Jo Schultz and her family with Alaska Perfect Peony had one of the first peony operations in the state of Alaska. KBBI’s Emilie Springer spoke with Schultz about the history of the farms in the state and Mina Gherman, marketing director at the Homer Chamber of Commerce about the various events this year’s festival will include.

Girls on Water participants provide a presentation of their summer adventure and research in Tutka Bay
Girls on Water, a camp expedition hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, finished a week-long kayak trip, bringing high school girls from across the country to explore the nature of Kachemak Bay at the intersection of art and science. Emilie Springer attended their community presentation at the Kachemak Bay Campus and talked to program coordinator Kara Kornhauser on Monday.
