Halibut Cove woman indicted on federal charges following floatplane-boat standoff
A Halibut Cove woman faces federal charges in a standoff between a floatplane and boat last summer. Marian Tillion Beck — the owner of The Saltry Restaurant in Halibut Cove — was indicted by a federal grand jury last week on counts of attempted destruction of aircraft and gross negligent operation of a vessel.
Remembering Hari Pariyar, Homer resident who died in January plane crash in Nepal
A Homer resident died in early January in one of the most deadly plane crashes in Nepal in more than three decades. Hari Pariyar was traveling with three other family members on the thirty-minute plane ride from Kathmandu to Pokhara. The plane took a sudden dive less than a mile away from its destination, killing all 72 passengers, including the pilot and crew. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

After fighting to wrestle with boys two decades ago, Homer Olympian continues to empower girls through sports
“We see girls in combat sports and in wrestling really having this confidence that comes from knowing, owning their space in their body,” Tela O'Donnell Bacher said. Bacher will be presenting her a TED Talk at Grace Ridge Brewery at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29.

KBBI will be celebrating the summer solstice again in 2023 by hosting the Concert on the Lawn on Saturday, June 24. Applications will be accepted now through Friday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m.
Dead snowshoe hare saves the day after Homer resident falls through the ice
When Homer resident Kelsey Haas fell into an open patch of icy water earlier this winter, she didn’t panic. It was her first time falling through the ice, but as a guide and avid adventurer, Haas knew a few techniques to get out of the frozen water safely. However, Haas didn’t quite expect the key role a dead snowshoe hare would play that day.
Fighting hunger in Homer
With a statewide backlog in providing SNAP benefits, the state recently reallocated nearly $1.7 million from emergency funds to help alleviate hunger. McBride said the funding will provide some much-needed food assistance for communities around the state.

Alaska state ferries renew ride-along program for Troopers to increase law enforcement presence
The Alaska Marine Highway System and the state Department of Public Safety announced the renewal of a ride-along agreement for Alaska State Troopers earlier this month. The program allows Troopers to ride for free on personal trips — if space allows — in exchange for law enforcement presence.
