There are two workshops happening Saturday, May 4th from 2-5 pm and Sunday, May 5th from 1-4pm in the HCOA Basement
All materials will be provided and you will walk out with your own handcrafted enamel earrings!

Calling all boaters! Join the US Coast Guard and Kenai Peninsula College for a free Maritime Safety and Education Open House on May 1st from 2 to 6 pm at Kachemak Bay Campus! Ask questions of local Coast Guard Marine Safety Representatives, explore hands-on exhibits by local experts, learn about licensing and reporting requirements, and how to get training to stay safe on the water whether you are new to boating, a commercial boater, or a recreational boater. That's May 1st, 2 to 6 pm at the Kachemak Bay Campus. Don't miss the boat!
HoWL DiRtBaG Clean-Up Week is an annual litter pick-up for youth and families. Monday-Friday, HoWL crews will be dispatched to clean up Homer's roadways, forests, and beaches. On Saturday, we will pick up trash at Bishop's beach, and celebrate everyone's hard work. Youth who participate can earn scholarships for HoWL wilderness programs, engage in community service, and win DiRtBaG awards. The HoWL DiRtBaG event also supports HoWL's need-based scholarship program, which helps provide expedition opportunities for all youth excited to HoWL! Assessing the role of larval connectivity on kelp forest fisheries across the California Marine Protected Area network
Mallarie Yeager, Habitat Conservation Division, Alaska Regional Office, NOAA
Dr. Mallarie Yeager is a marine habitat resource specialist at the Alaska Regional Office in the Habitat Conservation Division. Trained as a quantitative marine ecologist, Mallarie has expertise in fish habitat associations, species distribution modeling, larval connectivity, functional trait analysis, predator-prey interactions, community and biodiversity analysis, and metapopulation dynamics. Mallarie has a Ph.D. in Ecology Evolution and Marine Biology from Northeastern University, an M.S. in Ecology from San Diego State University, and a B.S. in Biology from University of North Florida. Prior to joining the Alaska Regional Office, Mallarie was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California Santa Cruz developing spatially explicit demographic population models to assess metapopulation persistence of five focal fisheries across the network of California marine protected areas.
Learn practical job skills for becoming a deckhand on any vessel in one weekend in Kachemak Bay Campus. Includes safety, survival skills, line handling, knots, gear, basic navigation, crew roles, helm, wheelhouse expectations, and more. Class fee is $150. Heidi's Booty Camp is a fabulous introductory workout class available to all ages & sizes! It will be based on basic form and functional movements that will progress into HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) using body weight and minimal equipment. Participants will work at their own pace and level. Led by instructor Heidi Cox. Cost of class is $3 and is scheduled for Tues. & Thurs. from 5:30-6:30pm.
Kids are allowed to come during this class but PLEASE bring your own toys & NO balls or wheeled equipment/toys allowed (for safety reasons).

Tim Alzheimer and Matt Iverson, with 20+ years of berry growing experience between them, will cover both the big picture topics (site assessment, soil needs, pests from moose & birds to hares & porcupines) as well as the specifics of several different berries: black currants, red currants, gooseberries, honeyberries, and more.
