Homer Foundation

In this age of Covid-19, even decisions made by the Homer Foundation are taking the pandemic into consideration. The organization last week announced the grants awarded through the City of Homer’s Grant Program to the 13 local nonprofits that applied this year, totaling $39,500.
While the amount is about $4,000 less than the 20-year average, it is in line with recent years’ grants, according to Homer Foundation Executive Director Mike Miller.

More nonprofits are applying for Homer Foundation grants. And since the foundation funds all eligible nonprofits that apply, its contributions to each organization has shrunk. But at a listening session Thursday with the Homer Foundation, nonprofits said even small contributions were critical to their work.

The Homer Foundation receives most of its grant money through an annual allocation from the City of Homer and endowment funds from the city as well as neighboring Kachemak City.

The Homer Foundation’s investment fund saw a sharp decline in earnings from October through December of last year. The fund earnings are basically interest made from the investment dividends.

The Foundation donates its earnings to the Homer community through grants to charities and nonprofits. Homer Foundation Executive Director, Joy Steward, says the Foundation’s ability to give is directly tied to how well the investment fund performs.
