Opening Homer Spit to commercial marijuana progresses
A recommendation to open the Homer Spit to the commercial marijuana industry passed through the Port & Harbor Advisory Commission Wednesday.
The Cannabis Advisory Committee pushed the recommendation to the harbor commission and the Advisory Planning Commission back in August, but the Homer City Council will have the final say on the matter.
If passed, the recommendation would allow commercial marijuana businesses to set up shop on private property only. The city has shied away from allowing marijuana operations to lease property because the plant remains illegal federally.
The city adopted zoning codes for the marijuana industry back in 2016. Marijuana businesses are primarily allowed to operate near downtown and in the southeast corner of town, along Ocean and Kachemak Drive.
The planning commission will consider the recommendation at its Dec. 6 meeting before it heads to the city council.
