Happy Valley combat vet’s memoir looks candidly at substance abuse, PTSD and healing
Bob Stark was 18 years old when he first jumped out of a Boeing C-17 aircraft and parachuted into northern Iraq. It was 2003, a year and a half after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Stark, along with his 173th Airborne Brigade, were on a mission, he said: Find Saddam Hussain and weapons of mass destruction.

A familiar face directs 34th annual production of the Homer Nutcracker
A recognizable figure directed Homer’s beloved Nutcracker production this year. Sally Oberstein is a Homer local that has put on a number of plays involving sizable casts over her three decades in the community. Most were written by herself or in collaboration with other local talent.
Locals work to resurrect Homer Civil Air Patrol
Two locals are trying to bring the Civil Air Patrol back to Homer. The program is the “civilian arm” of the U.S. Air Force, and is made up of cadet and adult volunteers. In Alaska, there are about 750 members who belong to 17 squadrons located throughout the state, including one in Kenai.
Board of Game to consider trap setback proposals for Homer area trails
The Alaska Board of Game will be meeting in Soldotna later this month to consider proposed changes to hunting and trapping regulations around the Kenai Peninsula — including several for the Homer area.

NASA grant brings space programs into the Kenai library's orbit
The Kenai Community Library is one of 60 U.S. libraries partnering with NASA this year through the NASA@MyLibrary program.The library used some of those grant funds to bring two new additions to its collection. And this week, it celebrated an astronomical milestone in the science world.
