Another candidate has filed for reelection to the Homer City Council. Two-term incumbent Heath Smith filed his intention to seek a third term, but in a surprising move, he filed for the seat with just a one-year term, not another three-year term.
At last week’s Homer City Council meeting, the first one held in city hall for 15 months, Smith said he enjoyed meeting in person again.
“You know, this is somewhat invigorating for me. I mean, I hated Zoom. And it really has diminished some of the value of this service to be honest and that's personal," Smith said. "But this feels natural and feels much better and it makes me feel like I want to do it some more.”
Until then, Smith said he was not planning on seeking re-election at all.
The one-year seat is to serve out the last year of former councilman Joey Evensen term, after he resigned last month.
Smith joins fellow incumbent Donna Aderhold on the ballot. She has also served a pair of three-year terms, and is seeking a third.
The last day to file for office is August 16, not next month as KBBI first announced. Municipal Election day is October 5.
