School District Seeks Feedback On Budget

Kenai Peninsula Borough School District

The Kenai Peninsula School District will meet with the public on Oct. 13 to discuss their budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The meetings will be held in schools across the Kenai Peninsula.

Pegge Erkeneff, KPBSD spokeswoman, says the district is looking for community input on the 2017-2018 budget.

“As part of the process we are inviting and asking for input from all of our families, our staff, community members who value education, in the state and on the peninsula, to give us their ideas for where we can have efficiencies and make reductions," says Erkeneff.

Erkeneff says the school district is expecting revenue to go down anywhere from three to 20 percent. That could have a big effect on next year's school district budget.

Budget cuts could reduce the number of teachers per student, says Erkeneff.

“We generally say that there’s ten full time teachers for every million dollars. If we have to take a 10 percent cut, it’s going to be very difficult to keep that out of the classroom,” says Erkeneff.

At the meeting, community members will learn how the school district creates the budget. They will also have a chance to give feedback about which school services should be a priority.

Meetings will be held on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 31 different schools across the Kenai Peninsula.

Information on meeting locations and times is available on the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District website.
