Tonight (Wednesday) at 6 p.m., the Soldotna campus of Kenai Peninsula College will present part one of a Zoom video conference series on the changing climate and how hunting and fishing could be affected. Led by Dave Atcheson, this two-part “KPC Showcase” will feature a discussion on changes experienced by those who’ve fished Alaska waters for decades.
“Tonight, what we’ll do is we’ve got some local folks before the scientists take over. Hope Roberts, who owns a charter company in Prince William Sound, Brent Johnson who is on the assembly, but he’s lived here his whole life and is a long-time Cook Inlet commercial fisher, probably his whole adult life, and myself, I’ve written books about fishing, a lifelong sports fisher,” Atcheson said “And we’re going to talk about the changes we’ve seen anecdotally before we turn it over to the scientists.”
One of those scientists is Erik Shoen from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
“Tonight we’re going to be talking about how climate change affects fishing on the Kenai. I‘m going to come in with a little bit broader view to talk about what the science tells us about how climate change is affecting salmon in Alaska, more broadly, and then I’ll tailor that message to the Kenai.”
Shoen says he will make a presentation on how the climate has changed here so far, and how salmon are adapting.
