Kenai Peninsula Borough Schools Superintendent John O’Brien announced the district’s planning for opening up school again in the fall.
In an announcement posted to the district web site Thursday, O’Brien said a 20-person team has been designing a safe start-up plan, with the planning goal of opening all 42 schools in the borough for on-site and in-person teaching and learning.
Both the Alaska Department of Education and the Department of Health and Social Services have requested alternate plans for all schools in the event physical distancing measures need to be taken, or if a more drastic return to remote learning is needed.
Schools will be split into three levels of concern, green, yellow and red, for low, medium and high risk environments, with plans adjusted accordingly.
The school board will be presented the plan in July and it will be submitted to the state for approval.
The district has a website set up for residents to keep up on the latest updates; it’s Smart Start 2020.
