Three of the four propositions on the Kenai Peninsula Borough ballot passed on Tuesday.
Proposition number one, called for a repeal of a controversial ordinance. It was perhaps the most contentious ballot proposition and the only that required a borough-wide vote. 59% of voters said “yes” to repeal the ordinance that gives Homer, Seldovia and Soldotna the power to tax non-prepared food during the winter months.
57 % of voters said “no” to proposition two, which would have given the borough power to create a law enforcement service area in Nikiski in response to a recent increase in criminal activity. The proposed service area boundary was the same as the current boundary for the Nikiski Fire Service Area.
69% of voters said “yes” to proposition three, which will expand the boundaries of the Anchor Point Fire and Emergency Medical Service Area to include parts of Cook Inlet.
And 57% of voters said “Yes” to ballot measure four, approving a bond issue of up to $4.4 million to purchase emergency response vehicles for the Central Emergency Service Area. This affects the communities of Sterling, Soldotna and Kasilof.
