Student athletics underway as school year nears

Homer High School

As parents and their kids prepare for a return of school in a couple of weeks, some students are already involved in school activities -- practice for fall athletics.
On Monday, Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Superintendent John O’Brien updated the school board on procedures for student athletes and competition according to the district’s Safe Start return to school plan.
“In regions of our district that are either green or yellow, the fall practice sports season through the Alaska Schools Activities Association officially began July 29th,” O’Brien said. “We are following the Alaska Schools Activities Association fall 2020 return to practice and return to play mitigation plans.”
O’Brien said team travel is dependent on where the home team’s school is at that time on the Red-Yellow-Green Covid infection scale.
“At this point, unfortunately, on the Eastern Peninsula, they are currently still in the Red status at the moment. So the start of their athletics season will be slightly delayed at Seward High School,” O’Brien said. “I am, however, encouraged by the recent numbers and the seven-day trend occurring on the Eastern Peninsula and in Seward.”
