Your invitation to Thanksgiving dinner

No matter if you are away from friends or family, don’t want to spend the day cooking or are simply looking forward to connecting with other community members, several organizations in and around Homer are offering free Thanksgiving meals.

Every year, the Homer United Methodist Church serves a traditional holiday meal that is open to the entire community. Pastor Lisa Talbot says they have been hosting a free dinner for the last seven years.

"And that was the start of our community Thanksgiving meals. Our whole motivation was to be able to enjoy a full Thanksgiving feast in the company of others, others like us who love the food but maybe didn’t want to cook it all themselves, other people who didn’t have friends and family around, people who maybe the holidays are a little melancholy for them and so just being out with others would give them a chance to have a sense of community, and it’s been growing ever since," said Talbot.

She says that on average, anywhere from 50 and 80 community members join them for Thanksgiving dinner. You can join the Homer United Methodist Church for their Thanksgiving meal between 3pm and 5pm at 770 East End Road. Reservations are not required and community members are welcome to bring a potluck dish, but it is not expected.

Cherie  Richter  and her husband Francis are the Canteen Manager and Commander of the Anchor Point VFW. Located on Milo Fritz Road in Anchor Point, the VFW has been hosting their annual Thanksgiving meal since 1983. Lately, they’ve been partnering with the Anchor Point food pantry.

"This Thursday, we’ll be serving Thanksgiving dinner between 2 and 5pm at no cost, but we are requesting that people bring canned goods or non perishable type food items that can be donated to the food pantry. If anybody wants to bring a dessert or a side dish, they’re welcome to do that. We hope that if you don’t have a place to go or if you just want to come and enjoy the members of this community, we encourage everybody to come and attend," said Richter.

You do not need to make a reservation or be a member of the VFW or the Anchor Point community to come out and enjoy their annual Thanksgiving dinner. For those who are homebound, they also provide meal delivery, which can be arranged ahead of time by calling 235-5582.

The Homer Elks Lodge will be hosting their annual Thanksgiving dinner between 1 and 4pm. Open to the entire community, it is free for veterans and members of the Coast Guard and by donation for everyone else. Homer Elks is located at 215 Jenny Way. Reservations are not required unless you have a large group and then you are asked to please call 235-2127.

The Homer Senior Center will be hosting their annual Thanksgiving meal beginning at noon. The cost is $20 and reservations can be made by calling 235-7655.

In Seldovia, the Linwood Bar & Grill will host their annual Thanksgiving potluck dinner beginning at 3pm, with community members bringing a dish to share. For more information, call the bar at 234-7674.
