About the Music:
Love Songs is a suite of 16 short pieces for viola, guitar, and clarinet by Anchorage, Alaska composer, Michael Dickerson. The pieces are drawn from iPhone recordings of instrumental improvisations recorded in various locations across Alaska, sent as forget-me-nots from one lover to another during times of separation. Taken together, these pieces respond to a relationship between lovers and to a shared relationship with the places where their love affair occurs. They evoke feelings of excitement, elation, obsession, uncertainty, estrangement, hope, and tenderness.
The suite is divided evenly into two sections. The first captures the early stages of a relationship with pure emotions, whereas the second captures later stages of a relationship in which feelings are mixed and complex. Throughout, there is a sense of boundaries–of stopping and starting, of being at the edge and appreciating without crossing over.
