Rental car shortage may be barrier to summer travel

During the Covid-19 Pandemic lockdown, car rental agencies nationwide sold off much of their inventory since nobody was traveling. But things are different today, with fully-vaccinated people feeling more confident about travel every day. But what they are finding is a lack of rental cars.
    “I’m just a little apprehensive that people realize, “Oh I made my flight reservation and lodging, now I’ll go in and book my cars,” and they have no way to get here,” said Homer Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Brad Anderson.

According to Alaska Department of Health and Social Services data, there have been almost 67,000 cases of COVID-19 in the State. That includes a gain of 50 cases on Monday. Nurse Lorne Carrol says that is a downward trend on the epi curve.

Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy signed a proclamation ending the State's Emergency Declaration last week and Department of Health and Social Services Commissioner Adam Crum signed a Public Health Order, directing DHSS to continue taking all necessary actions to address the COVID-19 pandemic including leading Alaska’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts.

At Monday night's Homer City Council meeting, Unified Command made their report to Council amid an uptick in cases statewide and in the Kenai Peninsula Borough.

Derotha Ferraro, spokesperson for South Peninsula Hospital told council that SPH has administered 819 COVID-19 tests in the last two weeks, and 14 of them came back positive.

Homer Unified Command changed the way it is providing vaccines this month. They have stopped planning mass vaccination clinics and shifted their focus to the COVID Care Clinic at 4201 Bartlett Street.
The Care Clinic has mostly Pfizer vaccine. Pfizer is the vaccine approved for ages 16 and older.

The Center for Disease Control has removed the Johnson and Johnson (Janssen) vaccine from its list of available vaccines due to six adverse reactions in the United States, one of which resulted in death.
