School funding, pensions among Sen. Gary Stevens' priorities for upcoming legislative session
The Alaska State Legislature begins its session Tuesday. Sen. Gary Stevens is a Republican who represents District C, including the Southern Kenai Peninsula, Kodiak Island and Seward. “I'm not a big fan of bonds and debt and taking on more payments, just in general,” Assemblymember Bill Elam said. “But, I've been to a lot of these schools now. And we really do need to get some of this stuff addressed.”
‘They’re so hardcore:’ Tidepoolers get rare glimpse of undersea critters at low tide
Soon-to-be seven-year-old Isa Santiago splashed through a tidepool at Bishop’s Beach Friday morning. She shrieked excitedly when she spotted a dark pink sea star glued to the rocks, surrounded by dark gray and green stars. Isa and her family made the four-and-a-half hour drive from their home in Eagle River to tidepool during one of the lowest tides of the year in Homer. Her mom, Kyra Santiago, said she started planning the trip nine months ago.

Writer and musician, Ken Waldman, visits Homer to promote new novel
“It's my 20th book,” Walman said. “I have 16, full-length poetry collections, I have a memoir, have a creative writing manual, have a kid's book, but also now have this novel.”He also has nine full length albums, including two albums for children. During the Trump Administration Waldman was inspired to write over 600 sonnets about the former president. Most of his work focuses on Alaska life, specifically the people he has met in the 49th state.

Homer’s first baby of 2023 was born Wednesday night at South Peninsula Hospital. Tenaya Boone and Fractal Mic welcomed their first daughter, Michaya Boone just after 8 p.m. — more than two weeks early.
