Ribbon-cutting for new electric car charger

On Thursday, the Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) will be unveiling the first fast-charging station to be installed on Alaska’s highway system as part of a project that spans from here to Fairbanks. The ribbon-cutting will be at AJ's OldTown Steakhouse and Tavern on Thursday, at 2 p.m.

The AEA awarded nearly $1 million in grants to support the installation of eight Level 2 EV chargers and 15 Direct Current Fast Chargers at nine locations across Alaska. These sites, located along the state’s backbone highway system less than 100 miles apart, will help develop Alaska’s EV charging infrastructure critical to encouraging further EV adoption.

The successful applicants are contributing an additional $500,000 in matching funds for a total of approximately $1.5 million in EV charging infrastructure. The goal is to have the corridor fully operational by next summer.
