Phones abuzz with calls from scammers

Homer Police Department

Phone lines have lit up around the Southern Peninsula recently as callers posing as “officers” of the Social Security Administration try to scam residents in this pre-tax season.

Even the Homer Police Department has gotten the calls, according to an announcement on their Facebook page. Some of the calls threaten arrest if fines are not paid to them.

The best thing to do is hang up immediately and report the call to HPD. Barring that, never give out personal information such as Social Security Numbers, date of birth or any bank information to unsolicited callers. The police suggest sharing advice about the phone scams with friends and family, especially elders.

The department has a handy pamphlet available on how to recognize and protect yourself against Identity Fraud. They’re available at the police station’s front desk.
