Former location of Anchor Point Seafoods burns down

Anchor Point Fire and Emergency Services

The former location of Anchor Point Seafoods burned down this weekend. According to an Anchor Point Fire and Emergency Services press release, the 3,000-square-foot structure on North Fork Road caught fire late Saturday evening. Alaska State Troopers, the Homer Volunteer Fire Department and Ninilchik Fire Department also responded.

It took about two hours for Homer Electric Association to turn off power to the building, which delayed firefighter’s efforts. Crews remained on the scene until about 5 a.m. Sunday, when the blaze was officially extinguished.

According to Anchor Point Fire Department's press release, the structure had been vacant for years. Jason Tanner is the owner, and he says the building, which formerly housed his seafood business, was being used for storage. Tanner is currently out of state and he heard about the fire in the early morning hours of Sunday.

"It's kind of a tough deal," he said. "I don't really know what the next steps will be. Hopefully rebuilding, hopefully the insurance will cover enough to rebuild or do what we need to do to get it taken care of."

The Anchor Point Fire department says the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Correction: A previous version misstated the location of the structure. It’s on North Fork Road.
