The first positive case of Covid-19 detected in Homer was announced on Saturday (March 28).
The Alaska State Public Health Laboratory notified South Peninsula Hospital that a person tested there earlier in the week was positive.
Neither the city, which released the announcement, nor South Peninsula Hospital, could say if the person acquired the infection from recent travel or from close contact in the community. There is no official word if the individual has been hospitalized, and if so, where.
Public Health Nurses have begun tracing the infected person’s contacts and will notify each significant contact to offer instructions for preventing further spread of the disease.
Of the 42 tests South Peninsula Hospital has conducted, 22 were negative, with 21 still pending.
The case announced Saturday marks the second confirmed Covid-19 case for Homer, though the first one was in an individual that had been traveling in the Lower 48 and was put into isolation upon return to Anchorage.
