Dumouchel gets advisory committee stamp of approval

The city of Homer is another step closer to having a new city manager after the hiring advisory committee interviewed the one finalist Monday evening.

Rob Dumouchel is currently the interim Director of Development Services at the city of Eureka, California, and was selected from a pool of over 30 applicants.

Dumouchel (du-mo’shell) spent an hour and a half with the committee, made up of Homer Deputy Harbor Master Matt Clarke who chaired the meeting, Aaron Weiser of Church on the Rock, Kate Finn, Barbara Howard, and Andrea Browning the city’s H.R. Director, who led off the interview with questions about his high mobility at the City of Eureka. She pointed out that in five years with the city he’s held six positions in three different departments.

He responded that he was seeking as wide a variety of experiences as he could with the goal of becoming a city manager.

“I was collecting the tools,” he said.

Finn asked him how a city manager could be useful in addressing drug addiction and homelessness issues in a community, something he brought up during his interview with the Homer City Council earlier in the month.

Dumouchel said that when he was with Eureka’s parks and rec department, he developed a multi-day course called the Pathway to Payday program that helped the homeless work on resumes and conducted mock interviews.

“They had skill sets that were hidden in there and we used our abilities with Parks and Rec to build that up and help people out,” Dumouchel said.

Clarke asked Dumouchel what style of leadership he may have witnessed in his past that influences him today.

Dumouchel said that sergeants and officers he had in the military were good leaders of people, but his management style is more akin to a past city manager he worked for.

“He was really good at finding the center of the room, finding the calmness,” Dumouchel said. “And getting a lot of stuff done without a lot of drama.”

In the end, the committee voted 5-0 to recommend Dumouchel to the council for city manager.

The city council itself will interview him again Wednesday evening at 5, also via Zoom. Details are below
