Mission & History

Mission: We provide news, information, and entertainment to foster community engagement.

Vision: We will be a public media leader in Alaska providing programming that strengthens the cultural, civic, and social fabric of our community.

We will build KBBI’s future on the strong foundation of a dedicated community, who established the station and continue to support it with enthusiasm, and with talented, skilled, resourceful staff and volunteers.

Values: Diversity, Critical discourse, Relevance & reliability, Innovative risk-taking, and Professionalism

In 2015, we developed a strategic plan to focus our work over the next few years.

About KBBI:

KBBI is a public radio station founded by community volunteers in 1976 lead by Bev Munro. Since signing on the air August 4, 1979, KBBI provides essential information services such as severe weather warnings, emergency alerts, and local, regional, state, national and international news as well as entertainment programming.

Our broadcast reaches more than 20 communities: To the east, Fritz Creek, Voznesenka, Razdolna, Kachemak Selo; across Kachemak Bay to Halibut Cove, Bear Cove, Tutka Bay, Seldovia, Nanwalek, and Port Graham; and north to Anchor Point, Nikolaevsk, Ninilchik, Clam Gulch, Cooper Landing, Moose Pass, and Seward. We also reach Kodiak Island, the Lake Clark area, and remote communities, homesteads, and fish camps in areas such as Chinitna Bay and Tuxedni Bay.

KBBI is the most-listened to radio station in our listening market. The website www.kbbi.org delivers KBBI’s content to an expanding online audience throughout Alaska, the lower 48 and outside the U.S.

Daily local news is provided by a two-person news department. Regional, State, National and International news are provided throughout each broadcast day.

Volunteers continue to play a role at KBBI. To date more than 700 on-air volunteers have been trained; currently 20 volunteers can be heard on the air. KBBI has built a solid reputation for training producers and several former staff and volunteers are now award winning national producers.

KBBI is an integral part of this community including several partnerships with local nonprofits and governmental agencies to help fulfill KBBI's mission. KBBI also services the public radio station, KDLL, in Kenai. This unique agreement includes a centralized programming, accounting and administrative support.
