Pebble Mine denied permit by Corps of Engineers

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has turned aside the application by the Pebble Partnership to mine for gold and copper in Bristol Bay. The announcement came from the U.S. Army this morning.

The announcement said that while the Trump administration supports the mining industry in general, the Pebble Mine cannot be developed without substantial environmental impacts in the “unique Bristol Bay watershed.”

The Corps cited eight sections of the Clean Water Act that the mine would violate if it were permitted to go forward.

The Pebble Limited Partnership has 90 days to answer the findings and submit an acceptable mitigation plan.
