OEM Director briefs Assembly on Coronavirus

via Kenai Peninsula Borough webstream

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly was hoping for a sparse audience at last night’s regular meeting in Soldotna in hopes of encouraging social distancing, and they got it, with only four people present in the audience.

Reports from South Peninsula Hospital and the school district were taken off the agenda, also in an effort to keep people in the room to a minimum. Comments taken from Facebook were read during the meeting as the assembly tried to keep access open to residents while limiting physical attendance.

The assembly’s first action was to cancel the April 7 assembly meeting and automatically reschedule all ordinances from that meeting to the next regular meeting, whenever that may be scheduled. The assembly also voted to move its April 21 meeting in Seward to Soldotna, if the meeting is held. The third action related to the coronavirus situation calls on the assembly president to put on the agenda only items that are time-sensitive borough business. It passed unanimously with an amendment that the change sunsets when the Covid-19 state of emergency is suspended.

In lieu of hospital and school reports, Assembly President Kelly Cooper of Homer asked the borough’s top emergency expert, Office of Emergency Management Director Dan Nelson, to give the assembly a briefing on coronavirus. You can hear it in its entirety at the link above.
