The burn closure for the Kenai Peninsula and Matanuska-Susitna boroughs ends as of at 8 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 4.
No burn permits are currently being issued. Open burning and burn barrels still require a burn permit under an emergency order extending Alaska’s wildfire season through Sept. 30.
The Kenai River reopened to boaters today, Wednesday from Cooper Landing state boat launch to Sportsman’s Landing. That section of the river will now be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
As of yesterday, Tuesday, September 3, Cooper Landing residents are no longer in level 2 SET phase of the borough’s evacuation plan. They have been downgraded to level 1 READY.
Nearly 700 personnel are fighting the Swan Lake Fire which is burning over 160,000 acres and is now 28% contained.
The Caribou Lake Fire, 25 miles northeast of Homer, is estimated to be 92% contained at 904 acres. Forestry expects the fire to be 100% contained this week. A Temporary Flight Restriction is in effect for the Caribou Lake area. The TFR does include a restriction on drones.
