Explosion closes Sterling Highway

Aaron Bolton, KBBI News

Editor's note: This is a developing story.

The Sterling Highway is closed near mile 166 just north of Diamond Ridge Road after a house explosion left debris on the road. The Sterling Highway will remain closed until 2 a.m. Access to and from Homer will be cut off so long as the road is closed.

No one was home at the time of the explosion, which was reported around 10:20 p.m. Thursday evening. Several area residents reported an explosion and debris on the road at the time. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

Kachemak Emergency Services, Homer Volunteer Fire and Anchor Point Volunteer Fire departments all responded to the scene.

Authorities notified the homeowner, who was out of town. Homer Electric Association and Enstar Natural Gas are on the scene to inspect infrastructure. Natural gas to the home has been shut off. Service to homes in the area will not be affected.

Aaron Bolton has moved on to a new position in Montana; he is no longer KBBI News Director. KBBI is currently seeking a News Director, and Kathleen Gustafson is filling in for the time being.
