Council Supports Benefits, Software, Awards Fish Pump Contract

City of Homer

Homer City Council held their regular meeting Tuesday night in Cowles Council chambers at Homer City Hall.

About 90 people attended the meeting and about 40 of them carried large red hearts intended to show support for council members Donna Aderhold, David Lewis, and Catriona Reynolds, who face potential recall.

At the meeting, community recreation Director Mike Illg gave a report to the council. He cited a yearly budget of $89,000 for the program last year, .75 percent of the city budget, down $7,000 from 2015.

The council adopted an ordinance replacing the board of adjustment with a hearing officer to decide certain legal disputes.

The council also passed an ordinance appropriating $150,000 for the replacement of port and harbor management software.

The council passed a resolution awarding the contract for the operation of fish pump services on the Homer Fish Dock to Icicle Seafoods, Inc. The resolution passed 5 to 1, with council member Heath Smith voting against.

Finally, a resolution passed unanimously requiring the city to pay benefits for two years to the family of city employees killed in service, such as first responders and emergency personnel.

The next Homer City Council Meeting will be Monday, April 10 at 6 pm.
