HEA Warns Of Phone Scam On Unpaid Electric Bills

Homer Electric Association

There’s a new phone scam making its way around Homer. According to a release from Homer Electric Association, the co-op has been receiving reports from members of suspicious phone calls over the last few days.

The scammers have been identifying themselves as HEA employees who are threatening to turn the power off because of an unpaid bill, HEA noted. The scammers then say they’ll keep the power on if the balance of the bill is paid immediately over the phone.

HEA advised customers to be aware of suspicious phone calls and if a call like this is received, hang up and then call the HEA office directly to check the status of your account. HEA has a protocol in place for getting in touch with members with overdue bills.

HEA reminded members to never give out any personal information like a social security number, bank account number, or credit card number unless they initiated the call and are sure it is legitimate.

Any questions may be directed to HEA at 1-800-478-8551.
