The city of Seldovia officially welcomed their new Chief of Police this week. Community members gathered at the Sea Otter Community Center on Nov. 21 for a badge pinning ceremony and reception.
Chief Robin Daniels moved to Seldovia from Troy, Alabama. For the past six years, he has served on the police force in the neighboring town of Louisville, Alabama. He began as a sergeant there and moved through the ranks to become Police Chief, a position he held for two years.
Prior to his time in Louisville, Daniels worked for two years with the U.S. Department of State as a law enforcement advisor in Iraq.
Daniels says he’s looking forward to the slower pace of life in Seldovia. He was also drawn to its strong sense of community.
“This is the kind of place where your neighbors know each other and call each other by name. That had a big appeal to me – the opportunity to have that kind of closeness,” he said.
Fostering open lines of communication between the public and the police department is a top priority for Daniels.
“I believe in communication, not just in work, but in my personal life as well. It’s really the key to problem solving,” he said.
He was selected to be the new Seldovia Chief of Police from a pool of seven applicants.
The job had been open since April, when former Police Chief Hal Henning took a new position in Washington state.
