Bunnell Street Pipe System To Be Repaired

Homer City Council unanimously approved an ordinance to repair the Bunnell Street pipe system at their meeting on Nov. 21.

The ordinance authorizes the appropriation of $494,000 from the Homer Accelerated Roads and Trails (HART) Program Fund for the project.

After a sinkhole formed on East Bunnell Street last winter, Homer Public Works arranged in May 2016 to have an engineering firm inspect the condition of the Bunnell Street pipe system. The inspection revealed holes and extensive corrosion in the pipes.

The project will line the existing pipe system on Bunnell Street with new pipes, rather than excavating and replacing the old pipes.

According to a Sept. 26 memorandum from Homer Public Works, the Bunnell Street pipe replacement project could begin as early as this winter.
