Severed Cable Cause of Phone, Internet Problems

If your phone and internet service was acting funny on Tuesday, this was likely the reason. Around 11 a.m. Tuesday a fiber optic cable was cut near Skyview Middle School in Soldotna.

David Morris, Vice President of Communications and Corporate Services for GCI, says the severed cable was impacting communications service across networks in the region, including some provided by his company, most of the Tuesday.

“This fiber cut impacted services on the Kenai Peninsula and we believe that the service that may have been affected may be wireless, landline, telephone and internet services,” said Morris.

Alaska Communications spokesperson, Heather Cavanaugh says crews worked overnight to fix the problem.

“Customers in the city of Homer and city of Soldotna may have experienced an internet outage or their home phone outage yesterday, August 16 due to a fiber cut. There was a construction project in the area and it was an accidental cut of the fiber. That has been fixed,” said Cavanaugh.

Cavanaugh says that service was restored at 1 a.m. today [Wednesday, Aug. 17].
