Homer Exchange Student Thanks Community for Supporting Heart Surgery

After spending the school year at Homer High School through the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange & Study program, Nouredine Mama left for his home country of Cameroon on Monday. But before the 17-year-old flew out, KBBI News Director Daysha Eaton talked with him about what he learned during his stay in Alaska and how the experience helped him decide to pursue college in the U.S., and a career in medicine.

Nouredine Mama’s host family, the Mitchells, and friends, used a gofundme page to raise money to pay for travel and lodging related to his surgery. They are more than halfway to their goal of $5,000. You can check learn more here.

Daysha Eaton holds a B.A. from Evergreen State College, and a M.A. from the University of Southern California. Daysha got her start in radio at Seattle public radio stations, KPLU and KUOW. Before coming to KBBI, she was the News Director at KYUK in Bethel. She has also worked as the Southcentral Reporter for KSKA in Anchorage.
