Alaska Democrats Prepare to Caucus Saturday

Alaska Democrats will caucus across the state on Saturday. Jake Hamburg is a spokesperson for the Alaska Democratic Party.

“The Alaska Democratic Party will be meeting on Saturday at 10 a.m. at 42 locations across the state to help determine our party’s nomination for President of the United States,” said Hamburg.

Voters in House District 31 can caucus at two locations: Homer High School or the Challenger Learning Center of Alaska in Kenai. The Learning Center in Kenai is also the caucus location for House Districts 29 and 30.

The District 32 caucus in Seldovia will be in the multi-purpose room next to the library. It is open to registered democrats from Seldovia, Port Graham, Nanwalek and Halibut Cove.

To participate in the caucus you must be a registered voter and registered as a Democrat. Voters can register and change their affiliation at caucus locations.  Hamburg explains the process of electing delegates.

“On Saturday, March 26th we will be electing 539 delegates that will go to the state convention. And those delegates will then elect 16 delegates to go to the national convention in July to cast their vote along with every other state in the country,” said Hamburg.

Delegates will be proportionally divided according to who gets the most votes. The state convention is set for May 13th through 15th in Anchorage. The national convention will be held in Philadelphia in July.

Voters must participate at the caucus locations designated for their House District. Caucus locations can be found at alaskademocrats.org
