The Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for Homer’s 62nd annual Winter Carnival. Jan Knutson, the Visitor Center and Special Events Manager with the Chamber, says the theme this year is, “Sunny Side Up”.

“We want to shoo out the winter. We’re on the upside of winter and getting outside and enjoying the sunshine,” said Knutson.

Knutson says a big part of the celebration is the parade and this year there will be some new categories.

“The performing arts, another new category is animals, birds and sea creatures – there may be birds prancing down the street, children – trikes and bikes for children’s floats. And it’s a real celebration of the sunshine. There may be sunny side up egg floats or whatever,” said Knutson.

Also, she says, they’re hoping businesses will decorate.

“We’re encouraging businesses, especially along the parade route on Pioneer Avenue, but throughout the community, to decorate their buildings, paint their windows – they may highlight specials for that weekend, but just really carrying out the them for businesses in our community as well,” said Knutson.

Knutson says registration forms for the parade are due by February 8th. There’s more information at the Chamber website, www.homeralaska.org

Homer’s Winter Carnival is scheduled for Thursday February 11th through Sunday, February 14th.  The parade will be held on Saturday February 13th at noon.
