The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District has extended the application period for a vacant seat on the School Board. Longtime board member, Sunni Hilts, retired late last year from the District 9 seat representing the South Peninsula.

A school district spokesperson says they only had one application for the position before the original December 29th deadline. The new deadline is January 20th at 5:00 p.m.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a qualified voter in Alaska, and a resident of the Kenai Peninsula and District 9 for 180 days.

District 9 includes schools in Nanwalek, Port Graham, Seldovia, Voznesenka, Razdolna, Kachemak-Selo, Anchor Point and McNeil Canyon.

Interviews will be held February 1st before the next regularly scheduled board meeting, when the board could vote on and approve a candidate.
