Flooding Closes Old Sterling Highway Near Anchor Point

The Alaska Department of Transportation has closed the Old Sterling Highway near

Anchor Point due to flooding. Gordy Lange, a Highway Maintenance Forman with DOT in Homer says the Anchor River is flooding near the intersection of Anchor Point Road.

“It’s closed until further notice due to ice jams and then the recent local, heavy snow followed by rain," said Lange.

The National Weather Service in Anchorage issued a small stream flood advisory for the Anchor river in Anchor Point Wednesday at 11:22 a.m. Lange says DOT crews closed the roadway around 12:30. He says there’s a lot of water on the roadway about a half mile from the Anchor Point end of the Old Sterling Highway intersection, and cars should not attempt to drive through it.

“There’s probably 150 feet under water and the depth, I’m not sure, probably 18 inches, something like that,” said Lange.

Lange says there are signs warning drivers of the flooding and redirecting traffic. He says drivers should use the New Sterling Highway instead. The flooding advisory remains in effect until 11:22 Thursday.
