Solargraphy Workshop with David Cherniak & Jenny Cartwright, Alaska AIR

Homer, Alaska – Bunnell Street Arts Center welcomes Canadian filmmakers David Cherniak & Jenny Cartwright as Artists in Residence from May 2-29th, 2026. They will develop a multi-channel film/video installation, host a solargraphy workshop, and share their work at a closing reception and potluck.

Artist Statement:

“Ai Weiwei’s 1995 Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn shows the artist deliberately smashing a 2,000-year-old urn. In doing so, he rejects part of his country’s cultural heritage and critiques the production of cultural value in China. ‘What would you smash to the ground?’ I asked Jenny as we admired the life-size Triptych. ‘A Macbook Pro,’ she replied. As artists, it is difficult to remain oblivious to the environmental impact of our rapidly outdated hardware and the ever-increasing amounts of energy required to store the images we produce.”

Solargraphy Workshop: Join artists David Cherniak & Jenny Cartwright for a solargraphy workshop using a pinhole camera on Wednesday, May 13th, 5-8pm. $20 discount/ $25 general / $30 pay it forward. Limit 12.
