Lucas Murgida, Alaska AIR Residency, Slidetalk & Potluck

San Francisco-based artist Lucas Murgida will be in residence from November 29 – December 13th, 2025 at Bunnell Street Arts Center. Join an artist slidetalk and potluck on Thursday, December 4, 5:30-7:30 to learn about his interactive project “The Locksmithing Institute.” Participate in “Lesson 16: Tangled / Entangled / Untangled,” December 8 – 12th, at Bunnell.

Artist Statement:

“Through social practice, performance, and installations I create opportunities for audiences to experience private moments in public situations. Thematically, my projects address ideas of service, perception, liberation, privacy, power, and labor by utilizing the under-appreciated aspects and roles of human existence – such as furniture, locks, teachers, and service professionals – as raw material to craft my experiences. I have worked professionally in roles such as a cabinet maker, fine-dining busboy, and yoga teacher, and mined these jobs as resources to produce artistic work. This includes the nine years that I spent working as a professional locksmith which gave birth to a conceptual project called “The Locksmithing Institute.” This “school” travels to different public places and aims to teach anyone interested in themes or skills related to locksmithing. The classes are always free and open to people of all ages, abilities, status’, and backgrounds.”

Artist Slidetalk & Potluck: Thursday, Dec. 4th, 5:30-7:30pm at Bunnell Street Arts Center. Bring a dish to share!
The Locksmithing Institute: Lesson 16 Tangled/Entangled/Untangled: Monday, Dec. 8th – Friday, Dec.12th, 12:00 – 3:00pm, community members are invited to meet with resident artist Lucas Murgida. Using washed up, tangled bundles of fishing rope, you’ll collaborate with Lucas to repurpose them into a collaborative art project. Bring your own salvaged rope, or use materials provided. Free.

This residency is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, Rural CAP Foundation and donors who support Bunnell Street Arts Center.
