How to Survive: Baling Strap Basket Weaving Workshop

How to Survive: Baling Strap Basket Weaving Workshop

Bunnell Street Arts Center presents a Baling Strap Basket Weaving workshop led by Rebecca Pottebaum on June 14th and 15th in partnership with the Anchorage Museum, SPARC, and the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies.

Originally part of a series connected to the Anchorage Museum’s exhibition, How to Survive, this workshop shares Hawai’i-based artist Gaye Chan’s basket weaving technique using foraged plastic baling straps to make containers. Chan’s basketmaking practice extends the life of an otherwise single-use material through craft while sharing a skill practiced around the globe: basket-making.

Join Rebecca Pottebaum, an Anchorage-based artist trained in Chan’s technique, for a basket-making workshop for adults and older teens. Materials provided.

Adult Workshop: Saturday, June 15th, 10am-4pm at Wynn Nature Center, $25. Space is limited to 10, registration required. Please bring a heavy hardback book (~5 lbs) to use as weights for starting baskets.
