The Caribou Lake Fire, 25 miles northeast of Homer, is estimated to be 85% contained. The footprint of the fire remains at 904 acres. Forestry expects the fire to be 100% contained by September 4. 73 people are fighting the fire on the ground and in the air.
The Alaska Division of Forestry asks hunters in Caribou Lake to please stay away from the fire area. And to be advised that Forestry is using the gravel lot on Basargin Road as a staging area.
A Temporary Flight Restriction is in effect for the Caribou Lake area. The TFR does include a restriction on drones.

The Forestry is asking hunters in Caribou Lake to please stay away from the fire area. And to be advised that they are using the gravel lot on Basargin Road as a staging area.

The Caribou Lake Fire is still 57% contained. The footprint of the fire is estimated at 904 acres. Forestry officials project that the fire will be 100% contained by the end of next week. Around 80 people are fighting the fire on the ground and in the air.
The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly approved two emergency measures in a  special meeting Thursday afternoon in response to the ongoing fires across the peninsula. A resolution declaring a local disaster and an ordinance appropriating $200,000 toward response efforts. Both passed unanimously.

Minimal fire growth is expected over the next several days as the predicted cloud cover will help to moderate fire activity. Around 80 people are fighting the fire on the ground and in the air.

Swan Lake Fire takes a toll on Homer businesses

The Swan Lake fire is causing major delays and closures on the Sterling Highway. And that’s having a big impact on local businesses in Homer, from a loss of tourist dollars to delays in goods.

Save-U-More did not have a good week last week. Mark Hemstreet is at the manager of the grocery store in Homer.

“Deliveries were definitely at least one day and sometimes two days behind so we ran short on some of the perishable items like bread, milk and eggs,” he said.  

Wildfire smoke causes an air quality advisory

Alaskans want to get outside in the summer. But this year, they’ve had to ask whether that’s wise in all this wildfire smoke. Most of the Kenai Peninsula and Anchorage have been covered in a smoky haze for the last four weeks from the Swan Lake fire near Sterling.
 

As of Tuesday morning, the fire was just shy of 99,000 acres, with 406 personnel actively working to contain it. The fire is emitting a wide cloud of smoke.
