Girls on the Run is an international program that gathers young women together, building running skills through the preparation for and completion of a  5 kilometer run. That's a little over 3.1 miles

On this mornings Brief, Pegge Erkeneff, representing Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, talks about new scheduling protocols for schools, and reviews numbers for enrollment, attendance and the District's food program.

When children who have been abused or sexually assaulted have to sit for an interview with a forensic investigator, South Peninsula Haven House in Homer lets them choose what they call a “comfort item.”

Last Monday, Homer Community Food Pantry distributed over 250 Thanksgiving boxes and they're just getting started on their yearly collaboration with Share the Spirit to make and distribute Christmas boxes.

Because of job loss and slow downs due to COVID, need has escalated alongside the rising number of cases on the Peninsula. In order to operate safely, Dennis Weidler from the Homer Food Pantry says they've had to scale down from 30 volunteers to 10 volunteers, and they're exclusively a drive-through operation.

Holiday season in Homer always means increased efforts to aid people in need, but what will that look like this year?

The Coffee Table shines a light on Domestic Violence Awareness Month this week.
Guests, from South Peninsula Haven House: Ronnie Leach - Executive Director, Kyle Darbonne - Violence Prevention Coordinator, Lindsay Collins - Director of the Children's Advocacy Center and Josh Collins - Batterers Intervention Program Coordinator.

South Peninsula Haven House

For decades, South Peninsula Haven House has organized a dinner and auction that has become an important fundraiser for the organization.

South Peninsula Haven House is currently seeking nominations for its 21st annual Women of Distinction awards, celebrating strong and inspirational women in the community. The organization’s largest and most important fundraiser and outreach event takes place on March 27th, with nominations due on Monday, March 2nd.

The work of supporting survivors of domestic violence happens year round. But as it is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, South Peninsula Haven House staff appeared on The Coffee Table on Wednesday morning with KBBI’s Kathleen Gustafson to talk about strategies for ending domestic violence and about support systems for survivors and their families.

When a family loses their belongings to fire, when a service member comes home, when a kid needs to sit for a filmed, forensic interview at Haven House, Kachemak Bay Quilters make quilts to help everyone feel safe and welcome. KBBI’s Kathleen Gustafson visited their weekly meeting at Kachemak City Center, for this story.
