The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly decided to place a proposed 10 percent bed tax on the ballot for this October at its June 18 meeting, but Mayor Charlie Pierce shot it down with a veto before the assembly meeting Tuesday. He says he doesn’t support a targeted tax on a specific industry and that a bed tax could deter visitors, among other reasons.

Even on a slow day, the Homer Boat Harbor is a busy place. But if you are captaining one of the many 100-plus-foot vessels berthed there, navigating in water that is barely deep enough while avoiding dozens of small skiffs as you turn around, it’s far from ideal. Bryan Hawkins, port director and harbormaster for the City of Homer, addressed the Homer City Council Committee on the Whole meeting on Monday night.

Several Kenai Peninsula residents asked the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly Tuesday to override Borough Mayor Charlie Pierce’s recent decision to veto $2.4 million of supplemental education funding. But the assembly refrained from doing so, at least for now.
