The Homer Farmers Market opens its gates on Saturday. For over 20 years, it has been a place to connect with and support local growers and the local economy.
Market Director Robbi Mixon says they have made some changes to their policies and practices that reflect the current public health situation. Mixon recently appeared on KBBI’s Coffee Table program to talk about what the market will look like this summer.
“Our hours are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and we’re asking that the first hour be reserved for our elders and folks that have a higher health risk," Mixon said.
Vendors will be wearing masks, and the market asks that shoppers wear masks as well. Also, Mixon says the market has downsized, with fewer vendors and more space to move.
“We’re opening with about 20 vendors and focusing on agricultural products as as well as some of the packaged foods. We’ve had to space out our booths to about 10 feet from each other to allow for adequate social distancing,” said Mixon.
Market tokens won’t be available. If you’re used to trading cash for tokens at the entrance to the market, Mixon suggests you bring cash in small denominations or bring a checkbook.
“Given that there is so many touches with our coin program, we are suspending it at least to start with. Several of our vendors are moving to touchless payment options,” Mixon said.
There will be several hand washing stations positioned around the market so patrons can follow recommended hygiene practices.
Mixon says they are proud of the community gathering place the market has created and cultivated, but for now, The Homer Farmer’s Market won’t be hosting children’s programs, musicians or guest chefs. They intend to review that policy monthly and get back to their family, carnival vibe as soon as it is safe to do so.
“If at all possible, just send one person from your household and limit your shopping time to 20 or 30 minutes. While we love, love, love the community vibe that we’ve built, we’re just approaching it a little different this year. We hope to return to a more festive atmosphere as soon as possible,” said Mixon.
The Homer Farmers Market opens Saturday morning, May 30 at 10 a.m. – at the market grounds on Ocean Drive. Please remember to mask up and to leave the first hour of business for elders and people with health issues.
