Homer Athletes Dominate In Senior Games

Homer residents led the pack at this year's Alaska International Senior Games.

The games are specifically for athletes ages 50 and up. Each August, competitors from across the country travel to Fairbanks, where they take part in over 20 sports. The sports range from bocce to swimming to horseshoes.

Homer resident Joe Martin finished the 5K cycling race in just under 10 minutes, earning him a gold medal.

Tim Renschler excelled in trap shooting, hitting 22 of 25 targets and finishing with the highest overall score. He also took home a gold medal.

But the event where Homer residents dominated was pickleball. If you've never heard of pickleball, it's similar to tennis, but it uses plastic wiffle balls.

Several Homer residents earned medals in pickleball singles, including William Bloom and Janie Leask, who both took gold. Tim Renschler took silver, while Paul Knight scored bronze.

In pickleball women's doubles, Janie Leask and Holly Van Pelt took gold, while Dru Renschler and Fairbanks resident Donna Holleman earned silver. Homer residents William Bloom, Paul Knight and Tim Renschler took gold in pickleball men's doubles.

All Homer athletes who competed in cycling and pickleball qualified for the National Senior Games, which will be held in Birmingham, Alabama in June 2017.
