Crime has been a large concern on the southern Kenai Peninsula. Anchor Point has heldseveral recent meetingson how to lessen it. But residents working to prevent crime may soon be able to receive a little help from the state.
Next month, organizations will be able to apply for a Community and Neighborhood Watch grant. The Alaska Legislature budgeted $75, 0000 for community-based public safety initiatives earlier this year.
Robert Pearson is with the state’s Division of Community and Regional Affairs. The division is administrating the grant, and he hopes the money will be spread out across different communities.
“At this point, we don't know how many applications we're going to get or how much the requests are going to be," he said. "If the requests that come in eventually are greater than the $75,000 then we will have to start some sort of ranking process.”
Pearson says the division is still finalizing the application. He expects it to be out by early to mid-September.
